4D, Inc. was originally founded in 1984 under the name Analyses Conseils Informations (ACI). It's vision was to produce and distribute a powerful and easy-to-use desktop relational database management system called 4th Dimension (4D). 4D replaced ACI as the corporate name in March, 2000. Laurent Ribardière, president of 4D since its inception, is the original author of 4th Dimension and the primary designer and programmer for other products in the 4th Dimension environment. 4D's other core programmers have been with the company for an average of nine years. This unprecedented continuity in engineering brings efficiency and consistency to 4D's software development processes.

Because of its continued emphasis on innovation and stability, both as an organization and from a product perspective, 4D’s technology has become the backbone to many critical business solutions. Examples include:

• The US Army runs 4D technology on its main web site (www.army.mil).
• More than two million schoolchildren and their parents login daily to a 4D-based solution to track their educational progress.
• Leading financial institutions such as Bank of America, Fleet Bank and The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. rely on a 4D solution to manage their internal security.
